Wann und wo hast du das ausgewählte Kleidungsstück gekauft?

Ich habe das Hemd in London gekauft in einer sehr schnuckeligen, kleinen Straße in Bloomsbury, also das zentrale Uni-Viertel in London, wo auch das Britische Museum ist, lauter schöne Galerien und Läden. Vor zwei Jahren waren wir also zu Besuch dort, Sarah, meine Partnerin, war auf einer Tagung und ich war mit unserem 9-monatigen Sohn unterwegs. Ich war also nur mitreisender Partner und Vater und konnte mit dem kleinen Baby nicht so wahnsinnig viel unternehmen, aber es war wahnsinnig schönes Wetter und so bin ich mit dem Kinderwagen durch London getuckert und habe ausgiebige Spaziergänge mit ihm gemacht. Ich bin immer in diese Straße gefahren, weil ich die von früher noch kannte, denn da gab es ein sehr schönes Café, einen super Buchladen und dann habe ich eigentlich mehr zufällig das Geschäft mit den Hemden entdeckt. Das war so ein richtig schickes Herrengeschäft. Ich kaufe normalerweise nicht so teure Kleidung, ich bin nicht so der Typ, der sich etwas Extravagantes anzieht oder leistet.  Aber das war zwei Monate vor meinem 50. Geburtstag Anfang Juni und ich hatte noch nichts anzuziehen für meine große Party! Ich habe da also das Hemd gesehen und bin eine Woche daran vorbeigeschlichen, weil das eben eine Preisklasse war, die ich mir normalerweise nicht leiste, einfach, weil ich nicht so einen Wert darauf lege und für Kleidung nicht so viel Geld ausgebe. Naja, aber es hat mich eben doch so angelacht, ich fand das Hemd irgendwie witzig. Dann war der Typ auch noch so nett, ich habe es dreimal anprobiert, mit großem Hin-und-Her, und am letzten Tag vor der Abreise bin ich dann nochmal mit der Kreditkarte in der Hand hingegangen und habe es mir gekauft! Tja, das war ne größere Anschaffung und der Typ meinte auch: „It’s a fun shirt for a fun day.“ und ich fand, dass ist genau das Richtige für den Anlass. Und die Party war echt gut, du warst ja da…

Und Deine Party Location und Deko hat genau zu Deinem Shirt gepasst…

Genau ich hatte eben schon die Location, das Palmenhaus, und wusste schon, dass es da so tropisch-exotisch aussehen würde und obwohl das normalerweise nicht so mein Style ist, habe ich mir das dann dafür einfach gegönnt.

Ziehst du das Hemd immer noch gerne an?

Ja schon, auf Partys oder wenn wir mal schick essen gehen, also für spezielle Anlässe zwei, dreimal im Jahr hatte ich es schon an. Der Geburtstag ist jetzt knapp zwei Jahre her und so lange ich noch reinpasse, trage ich es auch! Aber ich würde es jetzt nie an die Uni anziehen. Neulich war ich zum Beispiel auf einer Party von einer Unikollegin und jeder hat dann mein Hemd kommentiert und sagte: „Wow, was hast Du denn da an? So kennen wir dich ja gar nicht…“ Es ist also schon etwas auffälliger, wenn ich sowas trage, also zu offiziellen Anlässen ziehe ich das nicht an.

Die Zeit um deinen 50. Geburtstag war ereignisreich und geprägt von großen Veränderungen?

Ja, da hat sich viel getan, mit Sarah habe ich einen neuen Lebensabschnitt begonnen, mein Sohn Benjamin wurde im August 2014 geboren und ich bin ein Jahr später 50 geworden. Das alles wollte ich mit der Party feiern. Teilweise sind Leute sogar von weiter her angereist und es war wirklich schön, alle mal an einem Ort zusammen zu haben.

Du bist ja relativ spät Vater geworden, wie hat sich dein Leben verändert dadurch?

Naja, organisatorisch hat sich schon einiges verändert, weniger Schlaf, weniger Arbeit, aber beides finde ich eigentlich gut. Eine Kollegin von mir hat mal gesagt:

„Children ruin your life for the better“

…und das finde ich eigentlich einen ganz guten Spruch…

Ich habe lange Jahre eben die Prioritäten auf das Arbeiten gelegt – ich arbeite sehr gerne an meinen Sachen, ist ja nicht so dass ich gezwungen werde – aber wenn man sich eben immer an den äußeren Dingen orientiert und an dem, was man schaffen muss und will, dann hat so ein Kind auf einmal ganz andere Forderungen. Ich finde, das war so ziemlich das Beste, was mir in meinem Leben noch passiert ist. Das muss ich sagen.

Zurück zur Kleidung. Wie würdest du deinen Stil beschreiben?

(lacht) Ach ich fühl mich eigentlich nicht so stylisch…

Welche Kleidung ziehst du denn gerne an?

Für den Job trage ich eigentlich schon immer Hemden und Jackett, das ist mittlerweile mein Standard. Anzüge allerdings nur bei Anlässen, bei denen das erforderlich oder erwartet wird. Krawatten nur ganz, ganz selten, wirklich nur für Bewerbungsvorträge oder Habilitations-Verfahren oder sowas, das ist mir sehr lästig. Und ansonsten eher funktional, es ist mir sehr lästig Klamotten einkaufen zu gehen, das mache ich sehr ungern. Es ist mir auch lästig darüber nachzudenken. Ich habe da nicht so eine Ader dafür, Sarah kümmert sich jetzt da drum…(lacht) Da nimmt sie mir häufiger die Entscheidung ab, was ich  mir kaufen soll, ich bin da einfach nicht so aufmerksam, was meine Kleidung anbelangt.

Benutzt Du Kleidung als Kommunikationsmittel?

Klar, natürlich kommuniziert man auch, wenn man nicht kommuniziert. Man kann nicht nicht kommunizieren, natürlich auch mit Kleidung. Es gibt so bestimmte Sachen, die ich jetzt einfach durchziehe, zum Beispiel, wenn ich eine Vorlesung halte, trage ich immer ein weißes Hemd mit einem Jackett, aber meistens dann kombiniert mit einer Jeans. Solche Sachen kommuniziere ich dann schon auch durch Kleidung, so dass ich da vorne als der Herr Professor rüberkomme, so will ich ja auch angesehen werden. Oder als ich Präsident der Shakespeare Gesellschaft war, da habe ich natürlich eine Krawatte getragen für all die wichtigen Anlässe, die da abgefeiert werden mussten. Da gab es natürlich dress codes der professionellen Art, aber ansonsten fühle ich mich auf dem Gebiet eher nicht so ambitioniert. Daher ist das Hemd, das ich ausgewählt habe tatsächlich etwas sehr besonderes, weil es das einzige Kleidungsstück ist, zu dem ich wirklich eine Geschichte erzählen kann.

Tobias habe ich für die Serie ausgesucht, weil er wirklich gar nichts am Hut hat mit Kleidung, bis ich ihn in diesem unglaublich tollen Flamingo Shirt gesehen habe. Tobias hat mir gezeigt, wie man Gedanken strukturiert, er hat mir eine Welt voller Geschichten  gezeigt und er hat mich nachhaltig mit seiner Begeisterung für Shakespeare angesteckt.

Tobias Döring ist Professor für Anglistik an der LMU München und er war bis vor Kurzem Präsident der Shakespeare Gesellschaft. Er hat zahlreiche Bücher geschrieben und herausgegeben, eins meiner Lieblingsbücher ist eine Sammlung von Texten und Gedichte über die  Londoner U-Bahn „London Underground: poems and prose about the tube“ (amazon Link). When and where did you buy your chosen piece of clothing?

I bought the shirt in London, in an adorable little street in Bloomsbury, the main university quarter of London. Around there you can also find the British Museum alongside many beautiful galleries and shops. Two years ago my partner Sarah and myself visited London because Sarah was attending a conference and I accompanied her with our 9 month old son. So I was only the „plus one“, spouse and father, and couldn’t undertake that much with a small baby, but the weather was beautiful and so I ambled through the streets of London and went for long walks with the baby. I always went to this one street that I still knew from when I stayed there before, because it has a beautiful café and an incredible book shop. That’s how I discovered this shirt shop by accident. It was a very fancy gentlemens‘ tailoring shop. I normally don’t buy clothes that expensive, I’m not really the type who would wear something extravagant or spend money on it. But it was two months before my 50th birthday at the beginning of June and I didn’t have anything to wear for my big party yet! So I saw the shirt and tiptoed around it for a whole week simply because it was in a price range that I normally don’t spend because I don’t really care that much about clothes and don’t want to spend so much on them. But this time it really spoke to me and I thought the shirt was kind of funny. Then on top of it the shop assistant was so nice, I tried it on three times with lots of to-ing and fro-ing and on the last day shortly before we left, I came back to the shop with my credit card in my hands and finally bought the shirt!  Well that was a bigger purchase and the guy said to me: „It’s a fun shirt for a fun day.“ And I thought it was absolutely perfect for the occasion. The party was a lot of fun, you know it you where there…

And your party location and decorations matched perfectly with your shirt…

That’s right, I had booked the location already, the palm tree house in a botanical garden, and knew it would look tropical and exotic there. And even though it isn’t really my normal style I just treated myself to that shirt.

Do you still wear the shirt?

Sure, I wear it at parties or for a fancy night out, for special occasions two or three times a year. The birthday party was roughly two years ago and as long as I still fit in the shirt I’ll wear it! But I would never wear it for work at the university. I went to a university colleagues’ party recently and everybody commented on my shirt saying: „ Wow what are you wearing? I didn’t know you liked things like that…“ So people do notice it when a guy like me wears a shirt like that, so I would never wear that for an official occasion.

The time around your 50th birthday was eventful and marked with changes?

Yes a lot of things happened back then. I started a new life with Sarah, my son Benjamin was born in August 2014 and a year later I turned 50. And I wanted to celebrate all of this with this party. There were people at this party who travelled from far away and I so enjoyed having all of them in one place once.

You became a father relatively late in life. How did your life change with that?

Well it changed the whole organisation of my life; less sleep, less work, but I like both of it. A colleague of mine once said:

„Children ruin your life for the better“

and I think that really hits the spot.

For years work was my top priority – I love my work, nobody forces me to do it – but if you always focus on superficial stuff, things you want or have to get done, then you realize that with a child in your life, the focus is suddenly completely different. I think that this was the absolute best thing that happened in my life. I have to say that.

Back to the clothes. How would you describe your style?

(laughs) Ah I don’t feel very stylish…

What kind of clothes do you like to wear?

For work I always wear shirts and a suit jacket, that has become a uniform for me. I only wear suits on occasions that demand it. Ties very rarely for an inaugural lecture or official processes to gain professorship at the university, I really hate ties. Otherwise I’d say I dress functionally, I find it very annoying to go clothes shopping. I don’t like to think about it either. I don’t have the eye for it, Sarah is taking care of it now… (laughs) She helps me by deciding what to buy, I don’t pay so much attention to what I wear.

Do you use clothes as a way of communication?

Of course, you always communicate even if you’re not communicating. You can’t not communicate – it’s the same with clothes. There are a certain things that I consciously do now. For example, whenever I lecture at university I always wear a white shirt and a suit jacket but normally combined with a pair of jeans. I communicate with that the fact that I want to be seen as the Mr. Professor that I am. Or another example: when I was president of the German Shakespeare Society I wore a full suit with tie for all the important occasions that had to be celebrated. These were dress codes of the more professional kind, but otherwise I’m not really that ambitious when it comes to clothes. For that reason the shirt I picked is really very special because that’s the only piece of clothing I connect with a story.

I chose Tobias for this series because I knew that he really couldn’t care less about clothes until I saw him in this incredible flamingo shirt. Tobias is the one who taught me how to structure ideas, showed me a whole world full of stories and he sparked a lasting passion for Shakespeare in me.

Tobias Döring is a professor for English literature at the Ludwig-Maximilian University Munich and until recently was the president of the German Shakespeare Society.
